Kaknes actually executes a still life: ridged, swirled, and in vivid color, in the manner of the master...the real show is watching Kaknes paint, in a bold, reckless way that is itself an homage to Van Gogh. That the performer creates a painting while living his talk is remarkable, especially given that he doesn’t knock off the same still life at each performance. It’s all about the painting, Kaknes said, taking a bow. And in this show, it is! Carolyn Clay, The Boston Phoenix

Joseph Kaknes has created one of the most unique and creative theatre productions available today. The brilliant script, superb acting, and magnificent artistry make his one-man show about Van Gogh one of those incredible unforgettable moments of theatrical magic that audiences remember and talk about for the rest of their lives. Kaknes takes on Van Gogh's persona and leads the audience through the life of the tormented Dutch artist while creating an original work of art right in front of them.
Kaknes wrote and produced the play he performs. The play transports audiences to Auvers-sur-Oise, France, just days before Van Gogh's suicide. You'll feel as if you're sitting at the foot of the master as he delivers his final painting lesson. It's a superb display of live, hands-on painting. After the performance, Kaknes takes questions and spreads his passion and respect for the venerable Van Gogh. Kaknes has portrayed the tormented artist Vincent Van Gogh hundreds of times in performances in Massachusetts, New York, Oklahoma, Texas, and Florida. Following its premier in November 2002, Van Gogh was nominated for best one-man show at the Firehouse Theatre's Newbie awards.
When not portraying Van Gogh, Kaknes is a highly regarded artist in his own right. His paintings are heavily influenced by Van Gogh, Monet, and Sisley, but they transcend the work of the masters and exhibit his own individual artistic vision. The boldness and passion of his brush strokes and knife work bring life to each painting. His work reflects his love of the ocean and of the natural environment. Whether the subject matter is the coast of New England or the streets of Paris, Kaknes captures the spirit of the place and the moment in new and exciting ways. His works are included in some of America's most prestigious private and corporate collections. They are priced reasonably and have steadily increased in value over the years.
The 20 paintings that are shipped to you well in advance of the performance and which form part of the set, may be displayed and sold. All paintings sold, including the one created during your performance, will generate a 20% gallery fee for the presenter!
