Ruth Serrão was born in Brazil and studied in Rio de Janeiro and in Paris. Currently living in Rio de Janeiro, she performs as a pianist and chamber musician throughout the world and served as professor of piano and graduate studies at UNIRIO, where she also served as Chair of the Department of Piano and String Instruments, until her retirement from the university in 2008.

She has performed in recitals in Brazil, France, England, Italy and  US, and has appeared with chamber groups and as soloist with orchestras in Brazil and abroad under the direction of Georges Tzipine, Eleazar de Carvalho, Emílio de César, Dante Anzolini, Manuel Prestamo, Flavio Fiorence, Guerra-Peixe, Roberto Tibiriçá and Luis Gorelic, among other conductors.  For the Villa-Lobos Centennial Celebrations Ms. Serrão played with the National Orchestra of Brazil and the Orchestra of the State of São Paulo (OSESP), and participated in the world premiere of the complete series of Choros, at the 35th Villa-Lobos Festival, in Rio de Janeiro.  Ms. Serrão has performed in many of the Villa-Lobos celebrations in Brasilia and she participated in the Mozart Bicentennial Celebrations and Festival Panamericano de Música at the Memorial da América Latina in São Paulo, performing the world premiere of Variações Rítmicas para Piano e Orquestra by Guilherme Bauer, a work dedicated to Ms. Serrão.

Her repertoire includes many standard works by composers such as Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Liszt, Brahms, Grieg, Debussy, Ravel, and Prokofiev. However, she is also a champion of composers of the Americas and loves to perform works by Javier Alvarez, John Downey, George Gershwin, Alberto Ginastera, Charles Griffes, Norman Dello Joio, Edward McDowell, and Manuel Ponce.  And her repertoire of works by Brazilian composers is far too long to list here.  She has premiered many works by contemporary composers such as Guerra-Peixe, Maria Helena Rosas Fernandes, Guilherme Bauer, Gilberto Mendes, Antonio Guerreiro and Dawid Korechendler. Many of the mentioned composers have dedicated their works to Ms. Serrão.

She recorded live recitals for Public Radio in Madison, WI and programs with interviews and concerts for Radio MEC’s archives in Rio de Janeiro. She played at TV Cultura in São Paulo during Festival Guiomar Novaes, giving the world premiere of Rapsódica, Guerra-Peixe’s last composition. She participated in several programs for TVE in Rio de Janeiro as a pianist and in round table discussions.

In the U.S. she has appeared as a soloist, with chamber groups, and with orchestras. She taught at Marquette University and was one of the organizers of the Brazilian Festival at Alverno College, bringing Camargo Guarnieri to the United States.  She was instrumental in developing the preparatory and undergraduate music programs at Carroll University. She has also served as a jury member for numerous festivals and competitions, and offers master classes on contemporary piano music.

An acknowledged authority on Brazilian music, she has presented lectures and concerts on the subject in the U.S., in Europe and her native country.

Ruth  Serrão founded ENCONTRARTE, a non profit organization dedicated to the arts, in the colonial city of Vassouras, Brazil, offering music, dance and fine arts courses with support from the city, the Rotary Club and the town’s people. She also organized the two year Artists’ Program sponsored by Capes/Ministério da Educação, bringing to UNIRIO 24 foreign artists in various instruments and voice, giving master classes to young musicians from all parts of Brazil. In 2003, she founded UNIRIO Musical, a weekly concert series which has become an important part of Rio’s musical agenda.

Accomplished in research, she has published articles on Brazilian music and folklore and has discovered an 18th century choral manuscript by Padre José Mauricio. The book Guerra-Peixe: Um Músico Brasileiro was the composer’s last wish. He conceived a publication with analises and review of diferent aspects of his work as a musician, choosing the writers and the topics. Ruth Serrão was one of the project’s coordinators and wrote the chapter; Música para Piano.

Among her many recordings under the auspices of the Brazilian government Ms. Serrão, pianist and master teacher has been responsible for the revival of Padre José Mauricio’s keyboard music (which you can listen to below). Her latest project - O Piano de Guerra-Peixe - a two CD collection presenting an overview of the composer’s piano works, from 1943 to his last composition in 1993, was launched with critical acclaim.
