The American Piano Trio, in residence at Ball State University, is one of the most exciting chamber music groups in the United States and is internationally celebrated for its diverse programming and exhilarating performances. Their warm and yet vibrant interpretations of a broad collection of repertoire have been embraced by audiences in such diverse settings as the Interlochen Academy for the Arts, Villanova University Chamber Music Series, Yonsei University in Korea, and the Kazan Philharmonic’s Great Hall in Russia.
In 2008 the American Piano Trio was honored to perform and teach at the International Conservatory Festival hosted by the Rimsky-Korsakov St. Petersburg State Conservatoire, attracting students and audiences from Russia, England, France, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Germany, Luxemburg, Poland, Hungary, Armenia, Israel, Japan, China, the Netherlands and the United States. During the past nine years the Festival has become the “Pride of Russian Culture” according to the media and has earned the Year’s Best International Project Award on two different occasions.
Upon hearing a performance by the American Piano Trio of one his own compositions, Dr. David Ashley White, Director of the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston, wrote the he “loved hearing the performance. They are wonderful musicians. What I heard was what I intended.” Composer Jody Nagel stated that they “continuously achieved a deep and genuine musicality” and are “simply superb.”
In 2009, the American Piano Trio garnered standing ovations throughout a multi-city concert tour of Korea that included numerous residencies and master classes throughout Korea. A CD of works by American composers will be released in 2010 when the American Piano Trio will also be introduced to audiences in Britain.
Anna Vayman violin Anna Vayman is Associate Professor of Violin at Ball State University and a member of the American Piano Trio. A native of St. Petersburg, Russia, she has been a soloist with many orchestras in Russia and the U.S. including solo performances under the baton of Valery Gergiev, Yury Temirkanov and Gianandrea Noseda. She has appeared at numerous music festivals including Great Wall Academy International String Festival, China, Aria International Music Festival, U.S., Mikkele International Music Festival, Finland, Red Sea International Music Festival, Israel, Rotterdam Philharmonic Festival, Netherlands, and the Lucca Music Festival, Italy. Additionally, she has given master classes in the U.S., Russia, and China and was an adjudicator for the CCM Chamber Music Competition, Great Wall International Concerto Competition and Canadian National and International Stepping Stone Music competitions. Prior to joining the Ball State University faculty she taught violin, chamber music and orchestral repertoire at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and before coming to the U.S. she held the position of an Assistant Concertmaster of the Kirov Orchestra under Valery Gergiev. She has toured internationally with the orchestra, performing at Carnegie Hall, the Metropolitan Opera, Avery Fisher Hall, the Kennedy Center, Covent Garden, La Scala, and the Concertgebouw among other venues.
Anna Vayman’s degrees include a Master of Music Diploma with Honors, under Boris Gutnikov and Mikhail Gantvarg, at the St. Petersburg State Conservatory, and an Artist Diploma from the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, where she was a winner of the Concerto Competition and studied with Henry Meyer, Kurt Sassmannshaus and Dorothy Delay. She has enjoyed private studies with Isaac Stern and chamber music studies with members of LaSalle Quartet and Tokyo String Quartet.
Peter Opie cello Peter Opie has performed as a recitalist, chamber musician and orchestral player in the United States, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Korea, Russia, and his native Great Britain. He has also performed for radio broadcasts in solo and chamber music performances in both Britain and the United States. Formerly on the faculty of Eastern Michigan University, he has given cello and chamber music master classes at the University of North Carolina Greensboro, Indiana Univesity String Academy, Yeungnam University, Dong-A University, Chonnam National University, and the St. Petersburg Conservatoire, and performed chamber music with, among many others, members of the Cleveland Orchestra, Ida Kavafian, and the Chester String Quartet. Upcoming solo performances include concertos by Boccherini and Brahms, and he has also recently performed as a soloist with the Daegu Melos Ensemble in Korea. His orchestral experience includes working with the Detroit Symphony, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, Boston Symphony during Tanglewood, and the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra. He holds degrees from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and the Cleveland Institute of Music (where he was awarded the Helen Curtis Webster prize), and a doctorate from the University of Michigan. His principal teachers have included Richard Aaron, Anthony Elliott, Oleg Kogan, and Raphael Sommer.
Robert Palmer piano Pianist Robert Palmer's career spans three continents, with solo, orchestral and chamber music appearances throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. Following his critically-acclaimed Carnegie Hall debut in 1979, Palmer embarked upon a performing career that brought his artistry to many of the major concert halls of this country and abroad. His performances have been broadcast on National Public Radio and public television in the United States as well as in China, Japan, Korea, Spain and Taiwan. Palmer has been presented in recital by Community Concerts, a subsidiary of Columbia Artists, and he continues to perform regularly throughout the United States, with engagements in Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New York, Philadelphia and Washington D.C. He has made nine tours of Asia since 1988, with solo and concerto performances in the metropolitan centers of Osaka, Seoul, Shanghai, Taipei, and Tokyo. As a chamber musician, Robert Palmer has been heard in recital with musicians from the Paris Conservatoire, the Metropolitan Opera Company, the Montreal Symphony, the New York Philharmonic and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. He has been a member of the American Piano Trio since 2000. His most recent CD’s include a solo recording titled The Romantic Spirit and a collaborative CD with cellist Mihai Tetel. Robert Palmer enjoys a highly successful teaching career and is widely sought after as an adjudicator, artist-in-residence, clinician, lecturer, and presenter of master classes. |
